What is Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo or the 5th of May is the day that commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War in 1862. Celebrations of this victory began in California in 1863 in areas populated by Mexican-Americans, and this date has been observed annually since then. While this date is observed in the United States more than in Mexico, it has become a day that we celebrate Mexican-American heritage and culture. Today, Cinco de Mayo celebrations have been adopted all over the world with parades, parties, Mexican cuisine, and tequila- the national drink of Mexico.
Celebrate with Taster’s Club and Tequila Ocho
What better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year than with tequila straight from the heart of Jalisco, Mexico? Our Tequila Club members are in for a real treat this month, as we are featuring two bottles from Tequila Ocho, a unique tequila produced using traditional artisan methods that accentuate the raw earthy agave flavors tequila is known for.
Sustainably-managed and produced using traditional methods, Tequila Ocho is the first tequila to designate both the year it was produced and the field from which the family grown agaves were sourced. Each batch comes from a different field or ranch, offering distinctive “terroir” characteristics of that place. Because every estate only produces a limited amount of agave, each vintage of Ocho is both rare and collectible.
Tequila Ocho Plata
The Tequila Ocho Plata has clean, forward agave aromas followed by sweet citrus, papaya, and a hint of grapefruit. On the palette, it has a crisp agave flavor with some spicy pepper with a peppermint or minty finish. The best way to enjoy this tequila is by sipping it neat from a tasting glass or cognac snifter, where it opens up like a fine wine. After a few minutes in a glass, the composition changes, giving it interesting flavor layers throughout the sipping experience. The Plata also combines well as a mixer, especially a margarita because of its very pronounced and forward agave flavor.
Tequila Ocho Añejo
The Tequila Ocho Añejo is aged for at least one year in once-used white oak American Whiskey barrels. Made from 100% Blue Webber Agave, this tequila is smooth and complex, with layers of agave, citrus, and spices, making it an excellent tequila for sipping. It has distinct agave and floral aromas, including hints of gardenia, mild citrus, and a touch of chocolate. The flavors are complex and layered, which makes each sip a different experience. You’ll taste cooked agave with honey, butter, vanilla, and light caramel sweetness. The finish is a bit oily with notes of spice and pepper. The best way to drink Ocho Tequila Añejo is neat in a sipping glass or cognac snifter.
