When we find a unique distillery with a great back story and a fantastic line of spirits, we want to get our hands on as many bottles as possible so we can share them with our members. It's even more exciting for us when we can share those spirits with multiple clubs! Bull Run Distilling is one of those gems that offers multiple product types- whiskeys, bourbons, and vodkas, and our members can't get enough of them!
Let us answer some of our most commonly asked questions.
We like to feature various types of bourbon, so you can explore different flavors, expand your palate, and enhance your bourbon knowledge. You’ll receive bourbons made from a unique mash bill, such as Wheat Bourbon, High Rye Bourbon, High Corn Bourbon, or 4 Grain Bourbon. You’ll also receive high-quality bourbons that have been aged for at least 2 years. These include Straight Bourbon, Blended Bourbon, Cask Strength Bourbon, Single Barrel Bourbon, and Small batch Bourbon- all hand-crafted by award-winning distilleries in the US. Occasionally, we’ll also feature Bottled in Bond Bourbon Whiskey, which goes through an extra set of regulations for quality control.
A Bourbon Club is a membership that delivers a full-sized bottle (or several) to your door regularly, usually monthly or quarterly. For example, at Taster’s Club, we ship our full-sized bottles once a month. We also offer a 3-pack option, so you’ll receive three bottles at once- no need to wait! If you’d like even more options, check out our Bottle Shop, for one-off bottle purchases, delivered several times throughout the month.
We don’t just send you a full-sized bottle, we take you on a journey, from the creation of the bottle to the first sip. Each bottle is specifically curated for you, so you know you’re not just receiving a random bottle. Different options help expand your palate and help you discern what you truly like. We also help enhance your liquor knowledge with our Digital 101s, full of info unique to each bottle and expert tasting notes. Taster’s Club is trusted by large media outlets like Buzzfeed, Esquire, Forbes, and Men’s Journal, as well as thousands of members all over the US.
We’re continually expanding our networks and strengthening our relationships with distilleries around the country. Our Curator dedicates himself to seeking out the most unique, hard-to-find bottles from award-winning craft distilleries. We like to tease that he has the hardest job- sampling each bourbon before sharing it with you. Bourbons are chosen for their unique production styles, ingredients, and barrel finishes. We even offer bottles Exclusive to Taster’s Club with limited production and availability, so you know you’re getting something special.
The Bourbon of the Month Club does occasionally feature rye bourbon. While rye is generally spicier and a bit more aggressive in flavor than a regular bourbon, it offers beautiful notes of oak, smoke, or fruit. If the flavors are too powerful, you can soften them with a small splash of water or a chunk of ice.
All bourbon is made in the US, and 95% of bourbon is made in Kentucky. Each distillery we work with has a unique story to share, and we’re continually impressed with the passion and craftsmanship that goes into each of their products. Each selection is accompanied by a Digital 101, so you can learn all about the distillery, the bottle, why we chose it, and recommendations on how to drink it. Be sure to check your email during our Shipment week!
If they’re both made from grains, aren’t they the same thing? Well, not exactly. Whiskey is a broad category, and within it are many sub-categories and types. Bourbon is a specific type of American whiskey, and it’s also the most popular form of American whiskey. We go into more detail in our post about Bourbon vs. Whiskey.
It must be made in the USA.
It must be made with a mash bill of at least 51% corn. Distillers can use a combination of any other grains in the other 49%. These often include rye, barley, and/or wheat grain.
It must be aged in “new” charred American oak barrels. There is no specification of how long a bourbon must be aged, but if it’s labeled as a “straight” bourbon, it must be aged for at least two years. If there is no age statement, it’s usually a younger bourbon, aged less than two years.
It must be distilled to no more than 80% ABV.
When it enters the barrel, it can’t be more than 62.5% ABV.
At bottling, it must be at 40% ABV or more, which is standard for other whiskeys as well.
Bourbon must be aged in “new” charred American oak barrels. There is no specification of how long a bourbon must be aged, but if it’s labeled as a “straight” bourbon, it must be aged for at least two years. If there is no age statement, it’s usually a younger bourbon, aged less than two years.
But after this qualification is met, each distillery is free to come up with its own unique production style and barrel finishes. We love that there are so many options when it comes to barrel selection and the aging period, and we’re fascinated that a simple variation (like the environment) can change the flavor and characteristics of each expression.
Sipping bourbon is an experience that begins with reading the bottle label. Once you’ve familiarized yourself with the label, notice the color and body of the bourbon in its bottle. Hold it up to the light and notice the depth of the shade – most are golden, copper, or amber-colored. Then you’ll want to choose a glass with a wide mouth to enhance the aromas, and when you pour your bourbon, let it open up in your glass while you swish it around and admire it.
When you’re ready to sip it, let the juice roll across your tongue before swallowing so that the flavors linger in your mouth for a few seconds. Then breathe out through your nose and mouth at the same time to get the full range of flavors. Notice if the bourbon offers spicy, sweet, earthy, oaky, or citrusy notes. You may even get different flavors in your second and third sips – almost like it’s alive on your palate. Bourbon isn’t for chugging, so savor each moment of the experience, and sip it slowly.
There is no right or wrong way to drink bourbon, but be sure to taste it “neat” first. Then, feel free to experiment with other ways of sipping it: with a chunk of ice, a splash of water, or as the base of a cocktail.
Bourbon can be sipped by itself or it can be paired with some foods. Every pairing can be done with complementing or contrasting flavors. In a complementary pairing, the flavors of the bourbon and the food melt into each other. In a contrasting pairing, you bring out flavors in the bourbon or food to create a new or unexpected flavor adding a layer of excitement to the tasting.
For example, a sweet bourbon can be complemented by other sweet flavors like a chocolate bar or bowl of berries or a more complex dish like chocolate mousse or a fruit tart. But if you’re looking to contrast a bourbon’s sweetness, try more salty foods, like nuts, crackers, or fried chicken.
Contrast is useful when pairing acids and salts. For example, the saltiness of the cheese, along with its lactic acid contrasts nicely with bourbon. It can also de-emphasize the peppery notes, letting in some of the lemon or citrus notes in the juice.
We have a club for every taste. If you can’t choose just one, check out our Stock the Bar Club, which features a different alcohol type each month.
