When we find a unique distillery with a great back story and a fantastic line of spirits, we want to get our hands on as many bottles as possible so we can share them with our members. It's even more exciting for us when we can share those spirits with multiple clubs! Bull Run Distilling is one of those gems that offers multiple product types- whiskeys, bourbons, and vodkas, and our members can't get enough of them!
Let us answer some of our most commonly asked questions.
We feature a wide variety of gins, with unique botanicals and production styles. You’ll discover gins made from an interesting range of base spirits, such as potatoes, apples, wheat, grapes, and even olives. You might find styles similar to the classic London Gin, as well as infused vodkas- the possibilities are endless. We curate gins from around the world and bring them straight to your door- we can’t wait to share them with you!
A Gin Club is a membership that delivers a full-sized bottle (or several) to your door regularly, usually monthly or quarterly. For example, with Taster’s Club, you’ll receive a full-sized bottle once a month. We also offer a 3-pack option, so you’ll receive three bottles at once- no need to wait! If you’d like even more options, check out our Bottle Shop, for one-off bottle purchases, delivered throughout the month. Our Bottle Shop doors are always open!
We don’t just send you a full-sized gin bottle, we take you on a journey, from the creation of the bottle to the first sip. Each bottle is specifically curated for you, so you know you’re not just receiving a random bottle. Different options help expand your palate and help you discern what you truly like. We also help enhance your liquor knowledge with our Digital 101s, full of info unique to each bottle and expert tasting notes. We’re continually expanding our networks and strengthening our relationships with distilleries and brands around the world. Our Curator dedicates himself to seeking out the most unique, hard-to-find bottles from award-winning craft and artisan distilleries. Gins are chosen for their unique production styles, ingredients, botanicals, and even barrel finishes. We occasionally offer bottles Exclusive to Taster’s Club with limited production and availability, so you know you’re getting something special.
There are only two basic rules for gin. One, it must include flavor from juniper berries. And two, it must be bottled at a strength of at least 40% ABV (80 proof). This is much different from other styles of spirits such as bourbon, which have considerably more specific and involved legal definitions. However, the better quality gin which is labeled “distilled gin” is produced through the redistillation of botanicals.
Gin is one of those spirits that is as versatile as its ingredients. It can feature sharp, bitter, or sweet flavors, as well as fruity and spicy gins. Depending on what it’s mixed with, you can draw out different characteristics, and enjoy this spirit in a myriad of ways. Juniper is the one constant botanical used in gin, but even juniper can be a pronounced flavor or more subtle. It’s one of the most versatile spirits out there, and we can’t wait to share our favorites with you.
We search out the rarest and hard-to-find gins to share with you. Each distillery we work with has a unique story to share, and we’re continually impressed with the passion and craftsmanship that goes into each of their products. Every selection is accompanied by a Digital 101, so you can learn all about the distillery, the bottle, why we chose it, and recommendations on how to drink it. Be sure to check your email during our Shipment week!
Before the column still was invented, gin could be distilled in pot stills like other spirits, giving it fuller, heavier characteristics. However, these days, most gin is initially distilled in large column stills to a very high proof, creating a neutral base spirit. This means that any source of fermentable sugars can be used, including corn, wheat, rye, grapes, potatoes, barley, sugar cane, etc. No matter what sugar source is used, the spirit will be distilled to such a high level that it will be an almost entirely neutral spirit, which is then redistilled in a pot still that has a “botanical basket” attached. This is a porous chamber at the top of the still that’s filled with gin botanicals- all the delicious herbs, florals, spices, and citrus peels that flavor the gin. As the hot alcohol vapors pass through the basket, they pull the flavors from the botanicals, giving the spirit a distinct flavor.
We recommend trying your Gin of the Month selection straight first- before mixing it. This way you can really taste the flavors and experience the characteristics of the gin, just like the makers intended. Drinking a glass of gin is pretty simple. You can either sip it at room temperature from a shot glass. Or you can fill a glass with ice and pour an ounce and a half or two into the glass. Ice is optional, but the coldness does increase the crisp and fresh flavor of gin. You can spruce up your gin by adding a wedge of lime or a slice of cucumber too. Stir and enjoy! If you want to try your gin in a cocktail, the sky is the limit! We recommend mixing your gin with tonic water or check out your Digital 101s where we share special cocktail recipes each month.
We have a club for every taste. If you can’t choose just one, check out our Stock the Bar Club, which features a different alcohol type each month.
