Rum was once the most popular spirit in America. But in the mid 1700 s, higher taxes on molasses collapsed the industry, making space for a new spirit of choice: rye whiskey. By the end of the century, thousands of small distilleries appeared all over Pennsylvania, Maryland and the surrounding states. A new era was born.
