What is Additive-Free Tequila & Why Is It Better?
In short, additive-free tequila is tequila made with only the main ingredients, agave, water, and yeast. So, there cannot be any use of additional sweeteners, coloring, glycerin, or flavoring agents like extracts.
Additives are technically allowed in “additive-free” tequila
Here’s the tricky part, if you really begin looking for additive-free tequilas, because you’ll find that under Mexican tequila regulations (NOM-006-SCFI-2012), distillers can include up to 1% of additives by weight without disclosing that on the label.
Be careful out there! That means a brand claiming “100% agave” can still contain small amounts of sweeteners, colorants, or flavorings. That said, there are several brands out there that care about their legacy and long-standing reputation for either being additive-free or even organic.

The taste of real tequila and why it matters
The more additives that are used in the production process, the worse the tequila can end up tasting. This happens for a couple of reasons. The first is that, typically, when there are no additives used in the process, a more traditional creation process is used.
Whereas brands that are known for their additive use may use more modern methods that can strip away some of the sought-after notes that cannot be replaced beyond using traditional methods.
Additive-free spirits also help reduce the negative effects of a hangover, too! Even more reason to get some new additive-free tequila.
How Organic Tequila is Different from Additive-Free
Organic and additive-free are very different, although the marketing you see from both may prove otherwise. Organic specifically refers to how the agave is grown, which means no synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or GMOs.
Whereas additive-free is all about what happens after the harvesting and distillation process.
Like the additive-free laws in Mexico, an organically grown agave and bottled tequila can still legally include a very small amount of additives.
So, like we mentioned earlier, choosing a reliable brand will go a long way when it comes to finding the right tequila for you or as a gift.
The Complications with Tequila Regulators and the Additive Free Alliance
This is where it gets messy. As of August 2024, the Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT) ruled that brands can no longer label their products as “additive-free” on the bottle. This was a major blow to small, transparent producers built on clean production.
In response, the Additive Free Alliance was launched to provide an independent verification organization that could properly test for additive-free tequilas. It gets even more complicated from there, as the CRT has since filed a lawsuit, and the issue is still being worked out.
How To Spot Additive-Free Bottles
Even with the labeling restrictions, begin by checking the NOM number on the back of the bottle because this 4-digit number will help to identify the distillery. From there, you can use a NOM lookup portal, like Tequila Tracker, to find the brand and corresponding bottle.
From there, you can begin reviewing the distillery, their practices, and look further into the creation process, ensuring that they follow traditional standards and do not use additives.
