What is Reposado Tequila? Your Complete Guide

For those who appreciate the artistry of fine tequilas, reposado tequila offers a captivating experience. The term "reposado" translates to "rested" in Spanish, which perfectly encapsulates the charm of this tequila variety.

It embodies a bridge between the boldness of Blanco and the depth of Añejo, making it a must-explore for tequila enthusiasts and beverage connoisseurs alike. Let’s dive in.

What Is Tequila Reposado?

The word "reposado" translates to "rested" in Spanish, which is the perfect way to describe this wonderful spirit! It is a tequila that has been allowed to rest and mature, taking on new characteristics without losing the fundamental flavors of the blue weber agave plant.

Brief History

While tequila production dates back hundreds of years, the reposado category is actually a relatively modern invention! Before the mid-20th century, most tequila was consumed unaged (blanco) or aged for long, inconsistent periods. In the late 1960s, the iconic Casa Herradura officially introduced the first commercially recognized reposado. They realized that resting the spirit for a short period created a remarkably smooth, highly enjoyable drink. The Mexican government eventually officially recognized "reposado" as a distinct legal category, and it quickly became the most popular style of tequila consumed in Mexico!

Reposado Tequila Regions

Like other types of tequila, Reposados are produced in Mexico’s highland and lowland regions. The richer soil of the highlands can make this region’s agaves sweeter, making for fruitier tequilas. And lowland tequilas taste earthier because of the area’s water. The bottom line is that there are a variety of reposado tequila flavors to explore, depending on many things, including the region in which they’re made.

Aging Process

Reposado tequila is aged for a minimum of two months and up to a year, typically in oak barrels. This aging process not only softens the spirit but also imparts a rich tapestry of flavors and aromas. While American and French oak are common choices, some distillers opt for used barrels from bourbon, whiskey, cognac, or wine, each adding its unique twist to the final product.

Flavor Profile

The flavor of reposado tequila is a harmonious blend of agave and wood notes. Its light golden hue hints at the subtle complexity within, revealing layers of caramel, vanilla, honey, cinnamon, or even dried chocolate. This balance makes reposado a versatile choice, whether sipping it neat or crafting an exquisite cocktail.

ABV / Strength

Most reposado tequilas are bottled at 40% Alcohol by Volume (ABV), which is 80 proof. This is the standard strength for the majority of premium spirits on the market. However, you can sometimes find "still strength" or higher-proof reposados that clock in anywhere from 42% to 46% ABV. These higher-proof options deliver a more intense flavor experience and hold up incredibly well when mixed into complex cocktails!

How Reposado is Different From Other Tequilas

To truly appreciate what makes reposado so special, it's helpful to understand where this type of tequila is categorized by how long it rests in oak barrels. The beautiful thing about a reposado is that it sits happily right in the middle of the aging process between blanco and anejo.

While a blanco tequila is bottled almost immediately after it’s distilled and offers the purest agave flavor, a reposado is aged between two and twelve months. It’s this aging process that is a total game-changer, as it mellows out the sharp alcoholic bite found in a blanco.

A reposado is different from the other types, as the Añejo and Extra Añejo tequilas require an aging process that goes on for one to three years, plus. This extended time in the barrel gives them a much darker color and heavy notes of caramel and spice.

Ultimately, reposado strikes the perfect balance for mellowing the tequila without overpowering the bright notes of the agave you want to taste.
