What is Extra Añejo Tequila?

In short, Extra Añejo means "extra aged" in Spanish, and is the perfect representation for how this tequila comes to life.

This type of tequila is the highest aging classification and must be aged for a minimum of three years in oak barrels. The resulting liquid is a deeply complex, rich sip that’ll deliver an extraordinary experience other tequilas cannot match.

Brief History

While tequila aging has been around a long time, Extra Añejo is actually a fairly new category. The Consejo Regulador del Tequila (CRT) didn't officially recognize Extra Añejo as its own classification until 2006. Before it was declared its own classification, any tequila aged beyond the standard añejo requirements was still grouped in with añejos, which doesn’t make much sense, hence the need for a new category.

When this new category emerged, producers began experimenting with extended barrel time, different wood types, and multi-year aging programs. So, this category of tequila has been exploding quickly and has become a status symbol for prestige and incredible craftsmanship.

Creation Process & Region

Like other tequila types, it is produced primarily in the state of Jalisco. The agave is harvested, roasted, and then distilled. The main differentiator with the creation of Extra Añejo is the aging process. The distilled tequila is placed into oak barrels for a minimum of three years. Many producers use American white oak barrels that previously held bourbon or whiskey, while others use French oak or wine barrels to add different flavor layers.

Flavor Profile

The flavor profile for Extra Añejo tequilas is incredible and in part why these bottles are expensive and sought after. The extended barrel-aging process allows the bright agave notes to mellow, with rich layers of caramel, vanilla, dried fruit, and butterscotch. The sipping experience is very smooth from the nose, palate, and finish.

What makes Extra Añejo such a dynamic experience is that each bottle will taste slightly different depending on the type of barrels used, the length of aging, and the specific production style.

ABV / Strength

Most Extra Añejo tequilas are bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof), which is the standard minimum for tequila. Some bottles have a higher proof. That said, Extra Añejo typically drinks smoother than younger tequilas, as the “bite” you’ll find in a blanco is softened from years in the oak barrels.

How It's Different From Other Tequila Types

The key difference for Extra Añejo compared to other tequilas like Blanco, Reposado, and regular Añejo comes down to the aging.

The longer a tequila spends in a barrel, the more the wood shapes the flavor versus the agave and distillation process. With an Extra Añejo, you’ll experience a beautiful sip that unlocks what happens when years of oak aging transform the agave into a deeper sip with more character. Whereas a Blanco, almost unaged, provides that raw agave and peppery kick.

Because of this extended aging process, Extra Añejo is also the most expensive tequila category, with the evaporation loss that naturally occurs over the years in the barrel (called the "angel's share"), and the premium batches that distilleries reserve for long-term aging.

It’s truly the pinnacle of luxury when it comes to tequila.

The Best Ways to Enjoy Extra Añejo Tequila!

For an Extra Añejo, it's all about experiencing this spirit neat or on the rocks. If you're looking for an extremely elevated cocktail, it can work, but is sought-after for sipping.

Sip it Neat

If you want to truly appreciate the complexities of a Extra Añejo, we highly recommend that you try it neat. Pour it into your favorite tulip-shaped tequila glass and sip it slowly. This is the best way to experience its unique character.

Serve it on the Rocks

If you’re looking for a slight variation to sipping neat, serving it with a large ice cube on the rocks is another excellent way to experience a Extra Añejo. The ice cube will chill and ever-so-slightly dilute the sip without taking away its character. You’ll still be able to experience the deeper aging from the barrels that extend into the nose, palate, and finish.

Mix it in Cocktails

Like any aged tequila, Extra Añejo is perfect for a cocktail where you’re looking for more depth and an elevated feel. The incredible complexities will change any classic cocktail for the better. Extra Añejo is perfect for your cocktails if you're trying to truly impress a guest.
