What is Blanco Tequila?
In short, Blanco tequila is the most authentic and agave-forward tequila you can get. It’s named this way because "blanco" translates to "white" in Spanish, which refers to its crystal-clear appearance. It’s almost immediately bottled after the distillation process, typically within a couple of weeks to within 60 days.
Whereas with an aged tequila, it can take months to years to age, and develop that golden hue.
This lack of aging helps to deliver the truest taste of the agave. You’ll experience the slight natural sweetness, subtle earthy notes, and citrus. Blanco is known for being a bold spirit that’s vibrant, and it's a fantastic introduction to what makes tequila such a special spirit.
Brief History
The history of tequila goes back hundreds of years to the region surrounding the town of Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico. Indigenous peoples in the area were already fermenting agave to make pulque before the Spanish arrived. When Spanish conquistadors brought distillation techniques to the New World, locals began using these newly introduced methods with the agave plant, and a variety of beautiful tequilas was born.
The cool part about blanco is that it represents the original style of how tequila production began. Aging didn’t become popular until later, so the blanco was basically the start to it all. Over time, producers began experimenting with aging tequila in wooden barrels, creating reposado and añejo varieties.
Blanco is the foundation and the purest way to taste the spirit's true agave character and original distillation techniques.
Creation Process & Region
The regions that tequila can come from are pretty straightforward, as by law, tequila can only be produced in specific regions of Mexico, called Jalisco, but also in parts of Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. This geographical designation is designed to protect the authenticity and quality of the spirit.
The creation process starts with premium agave plants. In the beginning, the agave can take up to seven to ten years to fully mature. Once it’s ready for harvest, the heart of the plant, called the piña, is harvested and roasted. This process helps to convert the agave starches into fermentable sugars. From there, the piñas are then crushed to extract the sweet juices. Finally, it’s fermented and distilled. The distillation process can vary among different brands and distillers. Some producers may rest it briefly in stainless steel tanks to allow the flavors to settle, but it doesn't touch wood. This keeps the flavor as close to its most natural state.
Flavor Profile
If you take the time to sip and enjoy a nice blanco, here’s what you’ll find. Blanco is known for being crisp, smooth, with citrus notes, slight floral, and even peppery notes to wrap it up. There's also a natural sweetness from the agave itself, sometimes reminiscent of honey or vanilla.
Because there's no barrel aging, the flavor is clean and sharp. Some blancos have a peppery kick or a subtle earthiness that adds complexity without overwhelming the palate. The finish is typically short, making it incredibly easy to sip or mix into cocktails.
ABV / Strength
Most blanco tequilas are bottled at around 38% to 40% alcohol by volume (ABV), which is standard for tequila. That said, some craft producers may bottle at higher proofs.
How It's Different From Other Tequila Types
Blanco is different from other tequilas because of the aging. Here’s the breakdown.
Blanco (Silver/Plata)
Blanco is unaged or slightly aged up to 60 days. Clear in color, with bold agave flavors.
Reposado
A Reposado is aged for 2 months to 1 year in oak barrels. Takes on a light golden hue and mellower flavors with hints of wood and vanilla.
Añejo
Añejo is aged even longer than a Reposado, for 1 to 3 years. Darker in color, with rich, complex flavors from extended barrel aging.
Extra Añejo
Want something even more dynamic? Extra Añejo is aged over three years. Deep amber color, smooth and luxurious, often compared to fine whiskey or cognac.
How To Enjoy a Blanco Tequila
One of the best things about blanco tequila is that it’s extremely versatile and can be enjoyed in several ways. Here’s how we recommend enjoying your blanco.
Sipping Neat or On the Rocks
If you splurge on a high-quality blanco tequila, you’ll definitely want to try it as neat or on the rocks. Begin by pouring it into your dedicated tequila glass, take a moment to appreciate the aroma, and then take small sips. If you find it too strong, add a single large ice cube to mellow it out.
Cocktails
Blanco tequila is the go-to choice for classic tequila cocktails. Its bright, clean flavors shine in drinks like margaritas, palomas, and tequila sunrises. Because it’s not aged like other tequilas, the spirit doesn’t overpower any of the other ingredients. A great blanco bottle is a staple for any home bar cart (and we’ve got some recommendations for you).
With Citrus and Salt
If you want to drink tequila the traditional way, begin with taking a lick of salt, followed by your blanco, and biting a lime wedge. The salt enhances the agave's natural sweetness, while the lime cuts through the alcohol's intensity.

Caballito Cerrero Chato Blanco
Caballito Cerrero is a family-owned distillery with deep roots in Jalisco's tequila-making tradition. Alma del Jaguar translates to "Soul of the Jaguar". It’s produced in the highlands of Jalisco, and the production process emphasizes quality over quantity, with careful attention to fermentation and distillation. Volans Blanco Tequila
Finally, we love Volans for their small-batch tequila that emphasizes the distiller's craft. They use traditional methods, including slow-roasting the agave in brick ovens and fermenting with wild yeast. For their Blanco, it’s full-bodied and offers more character than many mass-produced blancos. A truly fantastic option for those who want to explore the craftsmanship behind premium tequila.
