Scotch is a type of whiskey made in Scotland from grain, malt, or a blend of both, but it’s mostly malted barley. For Scotch to be considered Scotch, it must be aged in oak barrels for three years minimum, though most sits for 12-25 years and even up to 5 decades. It also must have an ABV (alcohol by volume) of at least 40%.
We’re continually expanding our relationships with distilleries and independent bottlers around the world- some renowned worldwide and others are hidden gems. Our Curator dedicates himself to seeking out the most unique, hard-to-find bottles with unique production styles, ingredients, and barrel finishes. We even offer bottles Exclusive to Taster’s Club with limited production and availability, so you know you’re getting something special.

The name whiskey or whisky is based on the type of cereal grain used in the distilling process as well as how and where it was produced. Generally speaking, it’s spelled “whiskey”—with an e—in the United States and Ireland. It is spelled “whisky”—without the e—in Scotland, Canada, and in several other countries.
This “rule” wasn’t fixed until the 20th century. Up until then, the extra ‘e’ was used inconsistently. It’s believed that during the 19th century, Ireland’s distillers began to use the ‘e’ as a way to differentiate their whiskeys from Scottish whisky. Spelling their spirits differently gave the Irish another way to distinguish between the two. So in the end, the Irish stuck with the ‘e’; the Scots didn’t. Canada maintained the ‘Scottish’ spelling, while America chose the “whiskey” spelling. However, just to add an extra layer of complexity, some American- made whiskeys disregard the traditional American spelling. For example, Maker’s Mark adopts the Scottish spelling, as a tribute to the Samuels family’s Scots-Irish ancestors.
Another thing to note is how a whisk(e)y is made. Whisky is distilled twice in Scotland, and whiskey is usually distilled two times in the United States. In Ireland, however, whiskey is usually distilled three times.
There are five different types of Scotch, including three blends that make up about 90% of the Scotch bottles sold each year.
Single malt Scotch is made from water and malted barley only, with a pot still distillation batch process, at a single distillery.
Single grain Scotch is made from water, malted barley, and whole grains or malted or unmalted cereals at a single distillery.
A combination of at least one single malt Scotch with at least one single grain Scotch is known as blended Scotch.
Blended malt Scotch is a combination of at least two single malt Scotches from different distilleries.
A combination of at least two blended single grain Scotches from at least two distilleries is called blended grain Scotch.
First, you’ll need a glass. The Glencairn is the industry standard, and nowadays it’s easy to find. Then, pour yourself about an ounce of whisky.
Examine the whisky for color and consistency. Is it light-colored, like straw or white wine? Or is it dark like amber or mahogany? Color can be an indicator of flavor, but not always, as some Scotch producers add caramel coloring to deepen the shade.
Next, take a sniff. The range of aromas in Scotch can be remarkable, from sweet notes like raspberry and toffee, to funky aromas like seaweed, kippers, or even Band-Aids. A tasting wheel can help you identify different notes.
Now, take a small sip, allowing the whisky to sit on your palate for a few seconds before swallowing. Breathe out your nose, noticing how the quality and intensity of the flavor changes. Is it sweet? Fruity? Tart? Earthy? Smoky? Do you notice flavors that could be attributed to special casks that may have been used during aging, like sherry casks or wine casks? Lastly, and most importantly, do you like drinking it? Hopefully, the answer is yes—and if it’s no, well, never fear, because there’s almost certainly a Scotch out there for you.
